Random team generator

Paste the names, choose how many teams or how many people per team, and get fair random teams in seconds. Use it as a random group picker for class, a team maker for pickup games or a partner picker for pairs. Free, no sign-up, right in your browser.

Teams

Shuffled with your browser's secure random generator. Your list stays in your browser.

Optional: a level from 1 to 5 after the name (Ana 4) and a tag after a comma (Bia 3, goalkeeper).

Split by

To use this, add a level after a name, like Ana 4.

To use this, add a tag after a comma, like Bia, goalkeeper.

One pair per line: + keeps them together, x keeps them apart.

Team names

Teams are shuffled with your browser's secure random generator before the cards move; the deal only shows the result. Balancing by skill or tag isn't pure random: players are shuffled within each level, then dealt in turn, and the totals are shown so everyone can check.

How to make random teams

Five steps, and only the first two are required.

  1. 1. Add the names

Type or paste one name per line, or paste a column from a spreadsheet. Already have the list in the random name picker? Bring it over in one click.

  2. 2. Choose how to split

Pick a number of teams or a number of people per team, anywhere from 2 to 50. If the group doesn't divide evenly, you'll see exactly how it splits, like 3 teams of 4 and 1 of 3.

  3. 3. Add rules if you need them

Turn on random captains, keep two people together (Ana + Bia) or apart (Caio x Duda), or give each player a skill level from 1 to 5 by writing it after the name: Ana 4.

  4. 4. Make the teams

Tap the button and watch the names shuffle and deal into team cards. Each team gets a color and a letter, so nobody has to rely on color alone.

  5. 5. Send them

Copy the teams as WhatsApp-ready text, share a link where each person can look up their own name, save an image or print the list.

What the team generator can do

Number of teams or team size
Ask for 4 teams, or for teams of 5 and let the generator work out how many teams that makes.
Random captains
One captain per team, chosen at random and marked with a badge. No more arguing over who picks first.
Keep together, keep apart
Write pairs that must share a team or must not. If your rules can't all work at once, the tool tells you which one is the problem.
Balance by skill
Give players a level from 1 to 5 and the teams come out close in strength. Teams of the same size end up with close totals and averages. When sizes differ, the totals are evened out, so the averages can differ. Each team card shows both the total and the average.
Spread by tag
Tag people as goalkeeper, by class or by department, and each tag is spread evenly across the teams.
Leftovers your way
When the numbers don't divide, spread the extra people across the teams or, if you set people per team, put them on a bench team that plays next. If there are more extra people than teams, the tool adds one more team instead, so some teams come out smaller. The preview shows the split before you draw.
Team names
Colors by default, animals if you prefer, or your own name for every team.
Duplicate names
Two people called Sam? The tool asks whether it's the same person or two, and marks the second one Sam #2.

Is it really random?

Yes, unless you ask it not to be. The teams are shuffled with your browser's secure random generator (crypto.getRandomValues) before the animation starts; the shuffle and deal only show a result that's already set. With no rules turned on, every person is equally likely to land on any team.

Balancing by skill is not pure random, and the result says so. Players are shuffled within each skill level and then dealt to the teams in turn, so the totals stay close. Tags work the same way. Keep-together and keep-apart pairs narrow the draw too: the result is still random, but only among the splits that follow your rules.

One more honest point: if you re-draw until you like the teams, chance didn't pick them. Agree up front that the first draw counts. A shared link carries the teams you made. If someone taps re-draw on it, the new teams show up on their screen only, and your link stays the official one.

Your list never reaches our server. The names are stored in the link itself, after the #, so anyone with the link can see them. Share it with the group, not in public.

Ways to use a random team generator

Classroom groups
Teachers use it as a random group picker for group projects, lab partners and presentation groups. Tag students by class or level to keep the groups mixed.
Pickup games and PE
Soccer, basketball or volleyball: paste who showed up, mark the goalkeepers and play. Balanced teams make for closer games.
Pairs and doubles
Set 2 people per team to make random pairs for pickleball or tennis doubles, study buddies or a partner activity.
Work and workshops
Mix departments for breakout rooms, hackathons and team-building days, and keep apart the people who already sit together.
Game and trivia nights
Split the room for trivia, charades or a tournament, then send the teams to the group chat before everyone arrives.

Random team generator FAQ

How do I make random teams?

Paste the names, one per line, choose the number of teams or the number of people per team and tap the button. That's all you need. Captains, pairs and skill levels are optional.

Can I use it as a random group picker for my class?

Yes. Paste the class list, choose the group size and draw. Tag students by class or level to spread them evenly, and keep apart any pair who shouldn't work together. Print the groups or show them on the board.

How do I make random pairs or partners?

Set the team size to 2. With an odd number of people, choose whether the extra person joins a pair, making one group of three, or waits on the bench for the next round.

Does balancing by skill make the teams less random?

A little, and that's the point. Players are shuffled within each level and then dealt in turn, so you get random teams of similar strength. Each team's average is shown on the result.

What happens if the group doesn't split evenly?

You choose: spread the extra people across the teams, or, if you set people per team, put them on a bench team that comes in next. If there are more extra people than teams, the tool adds one more team instead, so some teams come out smaller. The result tells you how it split, for example 3 teams of 4 and 1 of 3.

How does everyone find their team?

Share the link. It opens the same teams on every phone, with a box where each person types their name to find their team. You can also copy the teams as text for WhatsApp or any group chat.

Is there a team picker wheel?

A wheel picks one name per spin, which is slow for a whole group. This tool splits everyone in one go. For a single choice, like which team kicks off, use the wheel spinner.

Is the random team generator free?

Yes. It's free, needs no account or app, and works in the browser on phones, tablets and computers.
